23 Mobile Things - Thing 14 - Videos

Oh, my goodness! I did not expect to like Thing 14 about videos as much as I do! 23 Mobile Things has opened my eyes to so many fun apps!  Lights, camera, ACTION!

Vine
The Vine app allows you to create very short (6 seconds) video clips.  After downloading the app, I found a couple of friends, who are using Vine, to follow.  I also linked my new Vine account with Facebook and Twitter.  Creating the video was easy and fun.  I like that you just tap the screen to start and stop recording.  The only drawback that I see is that you cannot add music to your video clip unless it is picked up by your device's microphone.  I tried to play music from my phone in the background, but the music shuts off when you open the app.  Thus, I got a lot of background noise on my Vine videos.

Our favorite vocal band, Six Appeal, has a presence on Vine.  Here is one of their sound checks posted by Trey.  He does a much better Vine than me.  Enjoy!

Viddy
I LOVE this app!  Viddy allows you to create 30 second videos and the app has several neat filters to choose from.  You can also add music.  The ability to add hashtags is nice.  I used the #23ThingsMN hashtag on my Viddy, thinking that the hashtag would work when I shared my video to Twitter, but it did not.  I guess the hashtags are only for Viddy searching.  To create my first Viddy, I decided to use an idea I found on Pinterest...Divergent Faction Reading Lists.  I used this idea for my Vine videos, too, but with only 6 seconds, each Faction had to be its own Vine.  With Viddy, I created one video that includes all of the factions.  After searching our library collection and coming up with books for each reading list, I chose the Dewey filter (for obvious reasons...I work in a library) to create my Viddy.  I did run into a problem adding music.  I did not have a Music option on my iPhone when creating a new video.  As a result, I created a video that had lots of background noise and saved it.  Then, I created a new Viddy and selected my previously saved video (the original one).  This allowed me to have the option to select music for my video.  I chose the Teen Fantasy track. I then saved this second video and deleted the first one.  To embed the Viddy into my blog, I used the embed.ly website to get the html code.

Socialcam
The Socialcam app does not have a time limit for the videos you create and there are filters and music that you can choose to enhance your video.  For my Socialcam video, I selected the 1970's filter (I like the static marks), a Classic title and the Cinematic music track and videotaped a display of famous authors.  Again, I used the embed.ly website to get the html code to embed the Socialcam video into my blog.

Magistro
Magistro is a little different from Vine, Viddy and Socialcam.  It is more of a video-mashup generator and is very similar to Animoto, which I learned about in 23 Things on a Stick.  You can create new content for your Magistro video or use photos and videos from your library.  For my Magistro video, I selected photos from my library to create a 2014 Minnesota Mineral Club Field Trips video.  With the free version of the app, you can use up to 10 photos.  I chose to use the Traveler theme and uploaded by own music, "Mud on the Tires" by Brad Paisley.

Here is an Animoto video I created using the same photos that are in the Magistro video.  As you can see, they are very similar.

Hunting Geodes Near Keokuk, Iowa

A couple of weeks ago, we traveled with friends to Keokuk, Iowa to hunt for geodes. The sought-after geodes are hollow and are essentially rock cavities or vugs with internal quartz crystal formations. These can be water- or even oil-filled. It's amazing to crack open a geode and feel water that has been trapped for thousands of years. Some geodes are solid. These are called nodules and you probably want to leave those where you find them. When out collecting, you try to weigh the geodes with your hands and bring home the lightest ones. These are the most likely to be hollow and filled with quartz crystals.

As you can see by the video, we had a great time playing in the mud! Everyone came home with a car full of geodes and a geode-cracking party is in the works. We can't wait to go back this Summer!

You Go Girl!

With over 11 million views on YouTube, Susan Boyle has become a very unlikely sensation. Her performance on Britain's Got Talent brought down the house and scored an amazing three "yes" votes from the judges. Here are some lessons to learn from this:

  • Don't judge a book by it's cover. It is obvious the audience and judges wrote her off before she even started to sing.
  • Susan had a dream and went for it.
  • Susan said her performance was a tribute to her mom, who she had cared for and is recently deceased, and what a tribute it was! Moms rule!
  • Middle-aged women rock!

Susan definitely has my vote...you go girl!

To keep the YouTube views rising, click on the link below. Watching this video for the first time gave me goosebumps. It is truly amazing!

The CBS Early Show has a great follow up interview with Ms. Boyle. Enjoy!

Creating My Own Google Map - Thing 32

I had fun creating a map with Google maps. Since we like to geocache, I decided to create a map that takes you to some geocaches in Elk River, Minnesota. I tried to include links to websites, photographs and a video. Let me know what you think.

Audio from YouTube Video

Quite a few of the students working on iMovie projects today wanted to use just the audio from a YouTube video. At home this evening, I successfully used vixy.net to extract the audio from a YouTube video and save it as an MP3. Then, since I had so much fun with the last post, I created an audio "movie" in Windows Movie Maker to embed in this post. If this works, it would be the same process to add this type of audio into iMovie.

Here's my favorite Hannah Montana fan!

Embed Music - Try #3

There were students in the computer lab today working on iMovie projects. I was trying to help them find music that they could legally download for free. As I was searching for music sites, I wanted to try to embed music into a blog post. This is not as easy as you might think. After several failed attempts, I think this will work (hopefully). I actually created a movie with Windows Movie Maker using a still digital photography and an MP3 version of the song. I then created the movie and saved it in Windows movie format. I'm now going to try to embed this into my blog.

"Do You Know?" (the ping pong song) by Enrique Englasias is my all-time favorite song to do abdominal workouts to (i.e.: crunches, sit-ups, etc.). It has a great beat to follow. The picture is a collage of photos I took at a Jazzercise convention in New Orleans in July of 2008. I hope you enjoy, even if you are doing crunches!

Playing Around with New Flip Video Cam

It snowed today and we got to leave school a little early. This gave me a chance to try out the Flip USB Video Cam I bought at Christmas. I made this video with music using my Flip Video. Then I uploaded it to YouTube to get the embed code for this blog post. Let me know what you think!

You can also take a snapshot with the Flip Video:

So far, it's really easy to use. It will do an hour of video and plugs into your computer (either Mac or PC) with a built in USB port for incredibly easy and quick downloads. It is really small and easily fits into a purse or pocket. The Flip Video cameras come in a bunch of colors. Mine is hot pink and my daughter's is orange. I purchased our Flip Video cameras through HSN.com for $120, which includes a matching nylon case. We have purchased one for school already, and plan on ordering several more for student check-out before the end of the year. I think this will be fun to use both at home and at school!

Quote and Video of the Day

"Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage."
Anais Nin (French writer)

The guy who filmed this video sure expanded his life! He must be a letterboxer or geocacher. I can't think of any other reason to hike on this trail!
